What is the Pelvic Floor?

EVERYONE HAS A PELVIC FLOOR.

Your pelvic floor consists of connective tissue and muscles that help support the pelvis. The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles that originate from the pubic bone to the "tailbone". They have three main layers that act as a hammock for the pelvis. 

The main purposes of the muscles include: 

  • Pelvic Organ Support
    •  bladder, bowel, internal reproductive organ support
  • Sphincteric Function 
    • ability to control your pee, poop, and pass gas
  • Spine and pelvic stability 
    • pelvic floor works in coordination with our diaphragm, abdominal muscles, and back muscles to help stabilize our pelvis and low back, improve daily movement, trunk support, and spine protection
  • Sump Pump
    • assists with circulation by pumping blood back up towards the heart
  • Sexual Function 
    • plays a role in your ability to have pleasurable intercourse and also painful intercourse
